Nowadays, we are always looking for ways to live more organically and eat healthfully. One of the best ways to do this is by growing our own gardens. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve written up this summary with 7 steps to starting a home garden.<\/p><\/blockquote>

One of the most enriching and satisfying things we can do is create something from nothing. What is better than being able to say that the carrot or tomato you\u2019re eating was grown by your family in your home garden, that you were personally responsible for growing it? I know that when we hear the term \u201curban garden,\u201d it can sound like a difficult thing to create, but after doing a good deal of research, I\u2019ve learned that it\u2019s actually pretty simple!<\/p>

Nothing beats the nutritional content of a fresh, organic product, but there are other benefits to having a home garden as well. First, think of it as the perfect escape from your routine; it will help you relax and give you a much-needed respite from the stress of daily life. Secondly, it\u2019s an awesome activity for the whole family and can help teach little ones the value of doing some work. Finally, it\u2019s a great way to reconnect with nature, enjoy the passing of the seasons, and appreciate natural life.<\/p>

Here are the 7 steps to creating a home garden:<\/h2>

Where to plant:<\/h3>

Find a well-lit spot. Analyze the light in your yard or on your terrace or balcony. Take into account the shadow that a nearby building could potentially create and the path of the sun. If you live in a very hot area, it\u2019s important to make your garden in a place that gets some shade. Location will be a determining factor in choosing what to grow and in what kind of containers.<\/p>

What to plant in:<\/h3>

Once you determine the space for your garden, you\u2019ll have to choose the containers for your plants. Take your experience level into account. If you are a beginner like me, it is best to start with two or three pots. If this isn\u2019t your first rodeo, you might want to set up a table full of plants or a vertical garden depending on the space.<\/p>

Dirt or substrate:<\/h3>

This is something that I found very interesting because I didn\u2019t know the difference between the two. You can plant your garden in ordinary soil, but growing won\u2019t be easy. This is because it is more difficult for the roots of the plants to get the nutrients they need. It\u2019s best to buy potting soil substrate, which is porous and allows the roots to breathe, gather nutrients, and retain water.<\/p>

Quality or quantity?<\/h3>

If this is your first time creating a garden, it\u2019s important not to plant too much. Four types of plants are more than enough. Keep in mind that plants are living things and will need constant care. If you start with a wide variety of plants, you may end up getting discouraged and quitting if you\u2019re not immediately successful.<\/p>

Seeds or plants?<\/h3>

It\u2019s best to buy plants and simply transplant them into your garden. This will make your life easier. But, if you want a bit more of an adventure, you can purchase seeds and start from scratch. Some are even fairly easy to germinate, such as lettuce, basil, cilantro, and spinach.<\/p>

What to plant:<\/h3>

The truth is that you can plant almost anything in an urban garden. However, it\u2019s important to know what to plant. There are a few factors that help determine that. If your garden receives little light, it\u2019s best to plant things like lettuce, onion, celery, spinach, and carrots. If it receives more than 6 hours of light you can plant tomatoes, chili peppers, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, and many other things. Another factor that will determine what you can plant is the size of your containers. For example, 0.5-liter pots are good for carrots or beets, but spinach needs at least a 2-liter container and tomatoes, 16. Take this into account before purchasing seeds or plants.<\/p>

How to water:<\/h3>

It is important to control the water flow. You don\u2019t want to add a lot of water at once because this will penetrate the soil very quickly and not moisten it evenly. If you are in a very hot area, remember to use more water so that your soil does not dry out. Always consider the climate, so as not to drown or dehydrate your garden.<\/p>

While starting a home garden might seem like an impossible task, following these 7 steps will make things easier. This said, you will only be successful if you\u2019re consistent and spend the necessary time on the project. This can be a very demanding hobby, but it will allow you to disconnect and relax. It can even be therapeutic.<\/p>

Over time, your first four pots might turn into a whole table with many different vegetables. Self-sufficiency is very important and an urban garden is a great step on that path. Remember that if you want your garden to be 100% organic, try to create your own compost, don\u2019t use insecticide, and create a sustainable ecosystem within the garden.<\/p>
