From Latin America to Europe, mother-daughter and mother-son duos prove that creativity is hereditary. Each one of these pairs has fashion in its DNA.

Many say that style and fashion are something we learn. And, while it’s true that we can learn to be more fashionable, it’s also true that some have this trait in their blood. I remember my own grandmother with her pearl necklace and carmine red lipstick. She and my mother are my number-one fashion inspirations.

Many designers have turned to their mothers for inspiration: Yves Saint Laurent, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, Christian Dior, and Brandon Maxwell, to name a few. Each one of these creative minds proves that fashion runs in the family.

So, it’s not strange that we would see familial duos at some of the most important fashion brands. Creativity runs in their veins and their creations bring two generations together. This results in spectacular collections that win over our hearts season after season.

Venezuelan Elegance: Carolina and Carolina Herrera

In 1996 Carolina Herrera’s daughter joined her mother’s company as the creative director for fragrances. Her mother defined the concept of elegance for New York high society, and her daughter managed to transport the brand’s DNA to the aroma universe. In 2018 the mother decided to retire from the firm, but during the 22 years the two women worked together, they showed us that luxury and class are simply in their blood.

French Irrverence: Sonia, Nathalie, and Lola Rykiel

Three generations of women who definitely have the fashion gene. Known as the “Queen of Fabrics,” Sonia changed design in the sixties. Her daughter Nathalie joined the brand first as a model and later as CEO, expanding the universe to include a children’s line. Today Lola Rykiel continues her grandmother’s legacy with her own brand, Pompom Paris, which embodies all of the irreverence and modernism that characterized Sonia herself.

Parisian Spirit: Evelyne and Ilan Chétrite

In 1984 Evelyne founded Sandro, a brand that became a bridge between luxury design and what we know today as fast fashion. Her garments are timeless pieces that are essential to a woman’s wardrobe. In 2008 her son, Ilan, launched Sandro Homme, the brand’s men’s line. In several interviews, both mother and son have made it clear that they act as independent designers and don’t get involved in each other’s collections. But, what is also clear is that style comes naturally in this family.

Colombian Heart: Olga Piedrahita and Danielle Lafaurie

Olga Piedrahita has been defining how Latina women dress for 39 years through her beloved vibrant and colorful designs. In 2007, her daughter, Danielle, decided to join the firm.
