They’re back and we can’t get enough of them! Hair accessories are one of the most coveted and surprising comebacks of the year.
Hit me baby one more time…This pop anthem has been stuck in my head for days because the 90s are back and we’re all obsessed with it. Yes, it might be 2021, but it feels like we’re living two decades ago. At the beginning of the year, supermodel Kate Moss was on the cover of British Vogue, iconic series like Sex and the City and Friends have made a comeback, and even the Spice Girls are in talks to produce a sequel to Spice World.
It’s as if we’re experiencing a collective case of déjà vu. In fashion, baggy clothing is getting a reboot and the long reign of skinny jeans is finally coming to an end. Everyone has been seduced by the Gucci aesthetic. Dior and Givenchy are getting revamped under new creative direction, and Versace has become the epitome of decadent Italian luxury once again.
This wave of 90s aesthetics has not only taken over fashion, music, and TV. It is also bringing back hair accessories, and millennials and Gen Z are both into it.
Many might associate headbands with the popular series Gossip Girl and the character Blair Waldorf. But before headbands made a comeback in the 2000s, this accessory was a favorite of Cher Horowitz from Clueless and Clarissa Darling from Clarissa Explains It All. Both women were style icons for that generation, and this accessory is now making a big (literally, the pieces are oversized) comeback thanks to Fendi, Gucci, Erdem, and Jennifer Behr.
Old School Goes New School
Hair clips are colorful, fun, and easy to wear. This accessory is back and making red carpet appearances, worn by both Ashley Graham and Kate Bosworth. Now, however, the clips of the past have been transformed into intricate pieces with inlays, pearls, and crystals—oversized pieces that become the focal point of a look.
Kendall, Hailey, and Bella. All trendsetters for this new generation. These women embody the model-off-duty look so well that it seems easy, even if it’s not, and the claw clip is the perfect accessory. It’s a way to get all your hair out of your face and pulled back in a carefree way. This accessory has been slowly making a comeback for several seasons, but now, it’s an absolute staple.
Anyone who lived in the 90s will remember those infamous scrunchies that we used to tie back our hair in a high ponytail or wore on our wrists as colorful bracelets. These donut-shaped accessories are back, but from the likes of Prada, Balenciaga, Valentino, and Versace. What’s more, this playful and colorful accessory is practical. Scrunchies are soft and elastic and won’t damage your hair. Plus, they’re just fun, and, honestly, kind of remind me of, well, donuts.
As they say, fashion always comes back around. These trends have been making a comeback since 2018, but it now seems that the best of 90s clothing and hairstyles is here to stay. This new generation longs for and even romanticizes this era they weren’t yet born to see, and those of us who were around in the 90s are welcoming these trends back affectionately and nostalgically.
Time to get out your Discman and listen to the Backstreet Boys, Aqua, or Ricky Martin. Put on some jeans and a white T-shirt, and just enjoy life. The nineties are back and they are here to stay!
