A classic, timeless color that is uniquely versatile. White clothing is a sign of good taste, elegance, and chicness.

We’ve all heard the expression “No White After Labor Day,” as this used to be an etiquette rule that dictated when people should stop wearing white. The origin of this phrase is unknown, but it is believed to have been created by the elite in the 19th century. It was created to distinguish the nouveau riche from families that had always been part of the aristocracy. The rule was that once the summer was over, it was inappropriate to wear white or ivory-colored garments as these weren’t fall tones, and this limited people to only wearing white during summer. So, anyone who continued wearing white or ivory into autumn or winter was not considered high society.

But this rule is, thankfully, now obsolete, and today white is a hue for all seasons. A clear example is how many all-white looks we saw in the Fall 21 runways–from New York to Paris, from London to Milan. Without a doubt, this hue is versatile and basic enough to be combined with different shades, and a total white look is absolutely spectacular. White denotes tranquility and new beginnings, and an all-white look conveys all these feelings. We can also play with silhouettes and textiles to create avant-garde looks full of sensuality.

Let’s look to the Fall 21 shows for inspiration. For example, there was Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection for Dior–a super tranquil white lace midi dress—and on the other side of things, there was Giambattista Valli’s daring, sensual dress. We saw tailored suits with flared trousers from Elie Saab, A-line capes from Sacai, leather jumpsuits from Fendi, and shearling aviator jackets from Givenchy. There is no limit to what this shade can do. This season we also saw garments with sequins and crystals—from Bottega Veneta and Michael Kors respectively–and faux fur blouses by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent. Bags and shoes also played with this tone; Burberry, Tod’s, Valentino, and many other brands gave us great looks in white.

White is one of my favorite colors. I love it for its ease and comfort. It’s a subtle way to shine. I love wearing it during the summer, when I’m enjoying the warm weather at the  pool or beach, and I also love it for a crisp autumn day in the city. Dare to pull off an all-white look or at least a garment or accessory.
